Nicholas Bowen
Nicholas Bowen is the co-founder and producer behind Quay West Studios.
Working across pop, country, rock and indie, he gets fully involved in each project and often ends up becoming part of the writing process along the way.
As a multi-instrumentalist, Nicholas also offers dedicated songwriting sessions alongside recording and production. The focus is always on the song first, capturing the emotion properly and making sure the production supports what the artist is trying to say.
Every record needs its own identity, so no two projects are approached in exactly the same way. Nicholas has strong foundations in traditional recording and production, but is equally happy trying something unconventional if it gets the right result. It is always about understanding the artist, the song and what that particular record needs.
Since 2019, Nicholas has been mentored by producer and engineer Emre Ramazanoglu, whose credits include Noel Gallagher, David Bowie, Carly Rae Jepsen, Jack Savoretti and David Holmes. That relationship has had a huge influence on the way Nicholas approaches production, recording and mixing.
Over the past year, he has also spent time working on his mixing with Nashville engineer Jeff Braun, developing his approach to modern country and pop and pushing his mixes further in terms of punch, depth and clarity.
Since 2024, Nicholas has also developed a creative relationship with Clyde Ward, known for his work with Tom Petty, Diana Ross, Sheryl Crow, Sting and George Michael. Their work together has focused heavily on songwriting, particularly lyrics, melody and understanding what really makes a song connect.
More recently, Nicholas has also been working with a number of audio and music technology brands, helping showcase new products, developing presets, recording sample packs and working with newer plugin companies as they develop their products.
A big part of Nicholas’ approach is making artists feel comfortable quickly. Sessions are calm, relaxed and patient, with plenty of space to work without feeling watched or under pressure. He is quick to pick up on how different people like to work and will adjust the session around them, whether that means giving someone more space, more direction or simply helping them build confidence in the room.
He is also known for being quick and switched on in sessions, often anticipating what is needed before it has even been asked for. That balance of calmness, speed and attention to the artist is a big part of how he works and how he gets the best out of a performance.
